J. Manwood, Manwood’s Treatise of the Forest Laws, 4th edition (London, 1717)
Special Collection, KD2280.M2

Little is known about John Manwood other than that he was a legal writer who lived near Chelmsford in Essex and he appears to have obtained some experience as a gamekeeper in Waltham Forest. He printed privately a collection of notes on forest law in 1592 and the first edition of his A Treatise and Discourse of the Lawes of the Forrest, was published in1598 and dedicated to Charles Howard, the Earl of Nottingham and Chief Justice of the forests south of the Trent.

The index provides a comprehensive list of the many aspects of life that were affected if one lived within the jurisprudence of a Royal Forest.
